“So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:12-14 NASB1995)
Faith in Jesus Christ, to be Lord and Savior of our lives, is so much more than just forgiveness of all sins and the hope of eternal life with God. It is a transformation of heart and mind away from living in sin to now walking in conduct in obedience to our Lord and to his commands. And it is a change of ownership from being under the control of Satan to now having Jesus Christ as Lord (Owner-Master) of our lives. And, as Lord, he gets to determine who we are and what we do and how we live for his glory, and not for self.
So, faith in Jesus Christ isn’t a religion or a religious practice, or religious rituals we perform. But it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ via us being crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as servants of God and of his righteousness. It, too, is a marriage relationship with Jesus as our husband and with us as his bride, and so our lives are now about doing what pleases our Lord and serving him, as led by the Spirit of God.
Therefore, by faith in Jesus Christ we transfer ownership of our lives away from self to God to now live the way our Lord wants us to live in being who he created and called us to be in his service. So, faith in Jesus is not just a status we wear, but it is carried out in our daily lives by how we live to the glory of God. So, we don’t worship our Lord only for an hour or two once a week, or for a few minutes of time in daily devotions, but we worship him in our daily walks of faith by becoming who and doing what he wants of us.
So, prayer is not something we do once or twice a day as a formality where we pile on a bunch of prayer requests to God and then we’re done until the next time. For me, prayer is open and continuous conversation throughout the day where God speaks to me and I talk with him and he leads me in what to do and where to go and what to say and what to pray and for whom. It is a two-way conversation (relationship) between me and my Lord just like he is here with me in person, which is spontaneous and not ritualistic.
For we need to regard Jesus Christ as though he truly is our husband and our best friend who is with us at all times of day or night. And we need to be those who are living holy lives, pleasing to God, in his service throughout our days while we still have the breath of life. We must no longer be living to please our sinful flesh, but we must be those who are being led by the Spirit of God in doing the will of God for our lives. For if we live according to the flesh, we will die in our sins and we will not have eternal life with God.
[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 10:19-39; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]
So, live for the Lord and not for self, and treat the Lord Jesus truly as though he is your husband and you are his bride, and do what pleases him always.
As the Deer
By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You
